The Second IAP Workshop - Entebbe, Uganda 10-13 November 2008

The second IAP workshop took place in Entebbe, Uganda on 10-13 November 2008. It was hosted by Makerere University, and was opened by the Vice-Chancellor of Makerere, Professor Livingston S. Luboobi, and the Irish Ambassador to Uganda, Mr Kevin Kelly.

Other speakers were the former Irish Tánaiste (Deputy Prime Minister) and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Dick Spring - who is chair of IAP’s International Advisory Board – and the Provost of Trinity College Dublin, Professor John Hegarty.

Four discussion papers were presented on key IAP concepts: development research for poverty alleviation; research capacity building; partnership principles within the IAP; and the use of foresight within the IAP. IAP researchers Dr Eimear Barrett and Dr Mary Goretti Nakabugo presented the findings of the first phase of the stakeholder consultation, involving 312 senior academics in the 13 universities, and Professor Ronnie Munck and Ms Sheila Moorcroft made a presentation on the IAP’s foresight exercise.

There was also a presentation on key issues in education and health research in African countries by academics from University of Dar es Salaam, University of Malawi, Makerere University and Universidade Eduardo Mondlane. Around 70 senior academics attended from the participating universities and other universities in Uganda and Kenya.
